In celebration of MLK Day, we held a hands-on service Tefillah featuring two meaningful projects organized by parents Amie and Jessica. Before diving in, students watched an inspiring video about The Lunchmakers, a grassroots organization founded in 2020 by three classmates—who were just 5th graders at the time! Motivated by their positive experiences with hands-on volunteering, they created a community initiative to regularly prepare and distribute brown bag lunches for unhoused individuals. Their story was a powerful reminder of the incredible impact young people can make.
Inspired by The Lunchmakers, our students divided into groups to get to work. One group assembled healthy bag lunches for the Ritter Center, while another prepared art supply kits for Drawbridge, a local organization that provides expressive arts programs in shelters, affordable housing facilities, and community centers across the San Francisco Bay Area. It was a fun and meaningful way to honor Dr. King’s legacy through service and community care.
