In the 6th-grade math foundations class, students are learning about algebraic expressions and variables. In this hands-on activity, students designed radial shapes and wrote algebraic expressions to represent the first five phases of a radial design. In a follow-up activity, students analyzed and compared the expressions they wrote, discussed the patterns that they saw, made predictions, and calculated the number of each shape in later phases (ex., 10, 15, 25) of their radial. This hands-on activity was a hit, and students were proud of their intricate and creative designs!
