A recent science exploration in 5th grade was a great success! After discussing the circulatory system, we watched a short video on how the heart and circulatory system works.
To help illustrate the power of the heart, we created simple pulse meters using marshmallows, toothpicks, and little red stickers to make a flag. Resting the marshmallow on the underside of our wrist, we were able to observe the toothpick and flag flutter. Each student witnessed their heart beating! We were all able to measure our heart beats for 15 seconds, then multiplied that by four to successfully measure our resting heart rate.
