In the 6th-grade Design Lab, students were tasked with designing and tailoring a new pencil holder based on their client's needs (a teacher). Judah and Lyla chose to design for our art teacher, Cristina. First, they measured and recorded different objects that Cristina uses in her instruction in the art room. Next, they began sketching designs and building a cardboard prototype.
After settling on a design, Judah and Lyla used Tinkercad, a web-based, computer-aided design (CAD) program, to make a 3D-printable structure. Knowing that the project would be used in the art room, the students designed their supply holders around a tree trunk to add an artistic flare. The final design includes holes in the trunk for scissors, erasers, pencils, pens, and paintbrushes. The top of the trunk has a compartment designed to hold brushes upright for drying, and the cups at the top are part of a removable paint pallet that can be used with acrylics.
