middle school boy with dark curly hair leans over to fill in a large project list

Last week the 6th grade began their interdisciplinary social entrepreneurship project with a 3-day intensive Startup Experience. They were joined by middle school students from Oakland Hebrew Day School, Contra Costa Jewish Day School, and the Shalom School, who made the trek to our campus to share in the immersive workshop.

The entrepreneurial program includes 3 components:

  • A 3-day "Startup Experience"
  • A multi-week project in entrepreneurship and social impact integrated into Jewish Studies classes and curriculum
  • Guest speakers highlighting entrepreneurship and social innovation

Throughout the project students will learn about the entrepreneurial mindset, toolset, and skillset, including design thinking, business modeling, customer interviewing, the LEAN Startup method, prototyping, and pitching. Small teams of students will come up with an idea for a for-profit startup business with a focus on social entrepreneurship that demonstrates their understanding of a local (Marin County) problem, and as social change-makers they will make a product or provide a service that "makes money while doing good." The program culminates in a "Shark Tank" style Demo Day on Monday, March 25, where student teams will pitch their ideas to a panel of experts.
