Last week, our middle school 7th grade math team competed at San Jose Middle School in a county-wide "Mathletes" meet against 20-25 Marin County teams representing everything from large public to small private schools. Although our Brandeis team was much smaller than the others, our students rocked the competition and captured SECOND place! Even more impressive - several 6th graders were invited to add their advanced math skills to our 7th grade team! Special kudos go to Katie (6th) and Ari (7th) for almost perfect scores (4 out of 5 correct answers)! We are very proud of our young mathematicians - way to represent!!
So what happens in a Mathletes meet? Students have 2 minutes to solve a variety of word problems ranging from probability to geometry and advanced pre-algebra to intermediate algebra. Students compete individually and then work together on team problems for 10 minutes. Our students prepare by practicing twice a week in Ms. Freeman's math class during a unit devoted to advanced problem solving (including time constraints!) and teamwork.
