Smart Ways to Give

Matching Gifts

Thank you for supporting Brandeis Marin! The Brandeis Fund, (formerly the Annual Fund) is the best way you can help us to bridge the gap between tuition and the actual cost to educate each student. That is why the school actively encourages all families to make giving to the Brandeis Fund a priority each year.

Your support goes to work immediately, helping to ensure that one more Brandeis student graduates as a passionate, engaged citizen prepared to meet the future. Each gift has an enormous impact on students, faculty and the mission of Brandeis Marin.

IRA Charitable Rollover

The IRA Charitable Rollover allows taxpayers age 70½ or older to transfer up to $100,000 annually from their IRA accounts directly to charity without first having to recognize the distribution as income.

How It Works

  • If you are 70½ or older, you can give up to $100,000 directly from your IRA to charities such as Brandeis Marin.

  • The transfer generates neither taxable income nor a tax deduction, so you still benefit even if you do not itemize your tax deductions.

  • If you have not taken your required minimum distribution for the year, your IRA charitable rollover gift can satisfy all or part of that requirement.

  • The transfer may be made in addition to any other charitable giving you have planned.

  • If you made a gift to a qualified charity of up to $100,000 directly from your IRA in 2019, your gift will qualify under the law.

  • The gift needs to be made by Dec. 31, 2019, if you want your gift to qualify this year.

To learn more about IRA Charitable Rollovers, visit the nonprofit website Council on Foundations.

If you have already made a qualifying gift in 2019, contact your advisor to make sure your gift is properly reported on your 2019 income tax returns. If you are interested in this unique opportunity to help further our mission, or if you have any questions, please feel free to contact:

Donor Advised Funds

Donor Advised Funds

Think of a donor advised fund (DAF) like an investment account or private foundation that manages your charitable giving without the expense or hassle. It’s a tax-effective way to accrue, consolidate, and distribute your assets for your favorite charity like Brandeis Marin! Donor-advised funds are managed by sponsoring organizations, which are themselves 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations.

The philanthropic research database, Guidestar explains the steps in this way:

  1. A donor contributes to a DAF and takes an immediate tax deduction. The charitable assets now legally belong to that DAF’s sponsoring organization. The donor, and other named individuals, often become a DAF advisor.

  2. The DAF advisor can recommend how the assets in the DAF are invested; proceeds grow tax-free.

  3. The DAF advisor can recommend grants to the nonprofits he or she wishes to support. The sponsoring organization will conduct due diligence and, if that research shows the organizations are eligible to receive tax-deductible contributions, issue the grants to the charities.

Currently, Brandeis Marin receives many gifts from school parents and the community from funds that include but are not limited to:
